Two margins, two questions
Reading your numbers
Here is what each one is actually telling you.
Gross margin: does the work itself pay?
Revenue minus what each sale directly costs you. If gross margin is weak, no amount of overhead trimming will save the business — the problem is pricing or delivery cost. Most healthy small businesses sit between 20% and 40%; professional services often run higher.

Net margin: does the whole business pay?
What is left after rent, salaries, software, and marketing. A 10–15% net margin means the business funds its own growth and survives a slow quarter. Below 5%, one surprise bill can put you in the red — even with strong sales.

When the gap between them is the story
Healthy gross margin but thin net margin means overhead is eating the profit — that is usually fixable. Thin gross margin means the core economics need work. Knowing which one you have is the whole point of measuring instead of guessing.
